Moving Massachusetts Forward
A Policy Briefing on Smart Growth and Transportation
The Commonwealth needs its Administration and Legislature to work together to build the next generation of housing and transportation infrastructure to sustain our competitive position in the world while supporting growth in our downtowns, urban squares, town centers, and rural villages. At the same time, we need to preserve the natural and historic assets that make our region special, improve quality of life by expanding healthy environments and active living, and mitigating the effects of global warming.
This policy brief provides recommendations for what the next administration can do to support communities across the state that are already building and preserving great neighborhoods. The policies and proposals in this brief encourage the next Governor to set and meet ambitious goals by providing better housing, transportation, and job opportunities to residents.
This document was prepared by the Massachusetts Smart Growth Alliance, a coalition of seven housing, environment, and community development organizations and Transportation for Massachusetts, a coalition of thirty-seven business, consumer, and environmental, and social justice groups. Our members work to ensure that the commonwealth’s housing, economic development, environment and transportation meet the needs of residents, workers, students and visitors – now and in the future.
We look forward to supporting the next administration as it pursues development, transportation, and environmental opportunities in Massachusetts.
